10 Quick Decortaing Fixes

Not all home decorating ideas require a heavy investment of time and money. If you’re looking for a few affordable home interior decorating ideas to freshen up a room over a weekend, try these ten:

1. Rearrange the Furniture- Pull your furniture away from the walls. Try positioning it at intriguing angles. For example, a sofa arranged diagonally across a narrow living room will make the room look wider.

2. Paint A Wall- Paint one wall your favorite color and make it the focal point. Hang interesting art on that wall and move a nice piece of furniture there. (Note: Make sure that the color is one that is shared with several other objects and fabrics in the room.)
3. Bring in Plants- Greenery always adds a breath of fresh air to a room. If you don’t have a green thumb, try silk plants and trees. The quality has gotten so good that it’s hard to distinguish them from the real thing.

4. Lay An Area Rug- An area rug is a wonderful way of defining a conversation area. Try one that complements the room. Lay it at an angle beneath your coffee table.

5. Hang Pictures or a Mirror- Hang pictures that reflect your personality. Try frames that are more ornate. When hanging a mirror, try and position it so that it reflects a nice view or an interesting architectural element.

6. Group Figurines- Pull out your favorite collectibles. Show off your personality. Find a display area and group related objects together, in sets of three or five. Try and vary the shapes.

7. Add Decorative Pillows- The good news about decorative pillows is that they are an easy way to add textures and patterns to a room. Still better, they can be changed to jazz up a sofa or chair before your room is ready for a major makeover.

8. Replace Lamps- Lamps are probably the one thing in your home that will give others a clue that your room is outdated. Seek out new and fresh lamps that make a statement.

9. Add a Throw or Afghan- Similar to decorative pillows, throws and Afghans add texture to your furniture. They come in all kinds of natural and man made fabrics. Find a pattern and style that you like.

10. Eliminate Clutter- Clutter has a way of eliminating the desired mood and effect of any room. Find storage spaces for papers, toys, and other items that take from the personality of a room.

How to Load Your Dishwasher Properly!

1. Don't block the spray arms.

In order for your dishwasher's water spray to work most efficiently, you'll need to load the machine strategically. That means making sure that the water sprays aren't blocked. On most machines, there's one spray arm below the bottom rack and another right below the upper rack. Steward suggests taking your finger and spinning the spray arms once the machine is loaded to assure that they can move freely.

2. Yes, there is a right way to load a dishwasher.

You can optimize cleaning by loading the dishes so they make best use of the spray arms. To ensure this, all soiled surfaces should be facing inward, or as Forte explains, "In toward the center, not out toward the walls." Here are other tips for how to best load the dishwasher:

-Large items like pots, pans and casserole dishes should be placed along the sides and back of the lower rack. Be sure that pot and long utensil handles don't protrude below the bottom rack -- one way that spray arms commonly get blocked. Some machines have additional jets on the lower back wall of the tub. Heavily soiled items can be positioned to face those jets for a direct, targeted spray and extra cleaning.

-Glasses and smaller items should go on the top rack, with glasses placed upside down in between the tines, never over them. (They're less secure when placed over the tines, increasing the risk of damage. Plus, the tines can cause food and water to get trapped inside, leaving stains.)

-Silverware is a little trickier to arrange. The key to getting these clean is to make sure that they don't nest. Alternate loading spoons and forks with the handles facing up and down; knives should always go in with the sharp end pointing down.

-Plastic can get damaged if you're using the heat dry setting, so always put these items on the top shelf, away from the drying mechanism.

-Platters and cookie sheets are best placed on the sides of the bottom rack. If placed in front, they may hinder the detergent door from opening or prevent the detergent from being dispensed and fully mixing with the water.

3. Make sure that the water is hot.

Since heat is a key factor in breaking up grease and stubborn food, Steward suggests running your kitchen tap before starting a dishwasher cycle. That way, the water will be hot the moment it touches your plates.

4. Add the right amount of detergent.

"More is not always better," when it comes to dishwasher detergent, Steward says. The amount you need depends on the hardness of your water. Look for guidelines in your machine's user care guide, but as a general rule of thumb, the harder your water is, the more detergent you'll need. If your water is soft (or if you've done a lot of pre-rinsing), using too much detergent can cause etching or a rainbow effect on glass that's irreversible.

5. Scrape, don't rinse.

Pre-rinsing is a waste of water, both experts agree. With performance improving in most machines over the years, all you need to do is scrape off big pieces of food and send the wares in for a wash. "The only time I would recommend it is if you weren't running a full load," Forte says. "In that case you can use a "rinse and hold" setting. It only uses a gallon of water, less water than rinsing them in the sink, and they can stay there until you can accumulate a whole load."

Every year in May, the Kiwanis Club sponsors Hilton Head’s premier BBQ event at the Coastal Discovery Museum of Hilton Head. The fields at Honey Horn spring to life with the wonderful smells of hickory stoked fires, slow cooked ribs and pulled pork.  This year's event is tomorrow, May 14, 2011.

Hundreds of residents and visitors join the Kiwanis Clubs to raise funds for local children’s charities, to enjoy some downhome music and to enjoy some of the South’s best BBQ.

Cooking starts the night before as restaurants and gifted amateurs compete for trophy’s and another year’s bragging rights.

Children play on inflatable castles and slides in the children’s area and run in the open fields. The Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department typically provide equipment and educational displays.

The Pros and Cons of Renter’s Insurance

There really is no battle between the pros and cons of renters insurance. It's such a good deal that there isn’t really a downside.

Pros and Cons of Renters Insurance: Plenty of Pros
It’s Cheap
For as little as 16 bucks a month you can get $30,000 worth of personal property coverage and that generally it comes with $100,000 in personal liability protection too.
Keeps Lawsuit Happy Neighbors at Bay
Renters insurance policies can cover your costs if held legally liable by someone who got injured or had their property damaged at your place.
Some pay your living expenses if you're forced to live elsewhere because of a covered loss. So, you won’t have to crash on your buddy’s couch.
Ipod Stolen from your Car?
Renters insurance not only covers your stuff if it’s stolen – most policies even protect your property if it’s taken from your car.
When your Dog Bites
Your liability coverage won’t just cover damage or injuries caused by your or your property – it’ll also protect you from damage or injuries caused to others by your pet. So if Boxer bites the next door neighbor – you’ll be able to cover medical expenses and legal fees if they take you to court (up to the policy limit.)
Cons?
The cons of renters insurance only exist if you don’t do your homework before signing on the dotted line.
Be sure to pick the right type of policy according to what you need covered.
Keep in mind that renters insurance policies can pay out one of two ways:
•Actual Cash Value will reimburse you for any property stolen or damaged after taking into consideration the depreciation of each item.

•Replacement Cost will reimburse you the full cash value of the current market price for each item.

Not knowing the difference or choosing the wrong one could quickly turn into a con when you file a claim.
Failing to take inventory of your things could also wind up causing a con. If you didn’t bother to mention or keep record of that expensive card collection of yours – you may have trouble claiming it.
So really the only con of renters insurance is not getting enough of it!
There really is no argument on the pros and cons of renters insurance, so make yourself a pro and shop around – the key to saving on renters insurance is comparing quotes online. Just be sure you get insurance advice from a trusted site

Happy Birthday Houdini!

Google on Thursday posted a homepage doodle in honor of what would've been illusionist Harry Houdini's 137th birthday.  The image (below) features a drawing of Houdini with chains on his hands in front of a red banner with the Google logo.

Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss in Budapest, Hungary in 1874. His family re-located to Appleton, Wisconsin four years later, and by age nine, Houdini and childhood friends established a five-cent circus, with Houdini billing himself as "Ehrich, The Prince of the Air," according to PBS.

Houdini relocated to New York City in 1887, and adopted the Houdini name five years later after setting up "The Brothers Houdini" act with friend Jacob Hyman, PBS said. Houdini eventually ventured out on his own and got his big break in 1899 with a handcuff escape routine, making him a top vaudeville attraction.

Over the years, Houdini was involved in several high-profile illusions, from the "Mirror Cuff" escape at the London Hippodrome in 1904 and escaping a Washington, D.C. jail in 1906 to emerging from an underwater box in New York's East River in 1912. In 1925, he hit Broadway with a 2.5-hour show called "HOUDINI."

Houdini died on Halloween in Detroit, 1926 from complications of appendicitis.

The doodle comes the same week that Houdini's last surviving assistant died at the age of 103. Dorothy Young joined Houdini's tour at age 17; her most famous role was that of Radio Girl, where she emerged from a large radio onstage, according to the Daily Mail.

Mmm, yummy!

Springtime Pasta

Serves 2

I happen to live alone and make a small batch of this pasta that's perfect for two (or one, with leftovers). For a family of four, simply double the recipe below. Adding the hot pasta on top of the arugula is critical as it helps in wilting and softening the greens.

1/4 pound fettuccine
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup heavy cream, warmed
1/3 cup pine nuts, toasted
3/4 cups arugula
1/4 cup freshly cooked peas
1/4 cup shredded prosciutto
Kosher salt and freshly-ground pepper

Lay the arugula on the bottom of a medium-sized serving dish.

Place the fettuccine in a boiling pot of water and cook until al dente. Pour into a colander to drain. Pour drained pasta on top of the arugula and add the warm heavy cream, butter, and Parmesan. Stir quickly to combine and wilt the arugula leaves.

Add the peas, pine nuts, and prosciutto and toss until well mixed. Season with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. Serve while piping hot.

On This Day in History...

Johann Sebastian Bach was born 21 March 1685.  He was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity.  Although he did not introduce new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, an unrivalled control of harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France.

Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, Bach's works include the Brandenburg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Partitas, The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Mass in B minor, the St Matthew Passion, the St John Passion, the Magnificat, A Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue, the English and French Suites, the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, the Cello Suites, more than 200 surviving cantatas, and a similar number of organ works, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor and Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, as well as the Great Eighteen Chorale Preludes and Organ Mass.

Bach's abilities as an organist were highly respected throughout Europe during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognised as a great composer until a revival of interest and performances of his music in the first half of the 19th century. He is now generally regarded as one of the main composers of the Baroque style, and as one of the greatest composers of all time.
