Sundance Film Festival 2011

Attention festival-goers: Sundance Film Festival 2011 is now underway! If you're in Park City, use this as your handy guide to notable screenings and events popping up in the snowy mountain town. If you're stuck elsewhere, consider this your roadmap for navigating all the indie buzz.

9:00 AM: 'Attenberg' screening at the Egyptian Theatre.

There's nothing like kicking off the first full day of festival screenings with a daringly insane Greek film from 'Dogtooth' producer Athina Rachel Tsangari. The film stars Venice winner Ariane Labed as a young woman busy with her cancer-stricken father and using her friend to practice mammalian sexiness, who often mimicks wild animal movements she learned from Sir David Attenborough's animal programs.

11:30 AM: 'Bobby Fischer Against the World' at the Library Center Theatre

Liz Garbus' documentary digs into the world of chess player Bobby Fischer, from child prodigy to chess champion to delusional fugitive. This is also the final project of late editor Karen Schmeer -- 'Sketches of Frank Gehry' -- who was killed by a getaway car almost one year ago, January 29.

1:00 PM: Film
Movement at Filmmaker Lodge

The likes of Harry Belafonte (who is the subject of Sundance flick 'Sing Your Song'), Michael Moore, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and more talk about how film can gain momentum for current social issues. Let's hope they chat about Kurt Kuenne's 'Dear Zachary' changing Canadian law last year.

2:15 PM: 'Incendies' at Prospector Square Theatre

Canada's Oscar submission from filmmaker Denis Villeneuve focuses on twins faced with their dying mother's shocking wish -- to find the father they believed to be dead and the brother they never knew existed. A parallel quest in the past sees the mother searching for her son, who was taken at birth during a war between Christians and Palestinians.

3:00 PM: 'Meek's Cutoff' at Egyptian Theatre

Michelle Williams re-teams with 'Wendy and Lucy' helmer Kelly Reichardt to tell the story of settlers traversing the Oregon Trail in 1845, and the growing distrust the group has with their scout, Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood). Does one of them get dysentary while another has to leave most of the meat they shot whilst hunting?

6:15 PM: 'The Future' at Eccles Theatre

Miranda July finally returns with her sophomore feature after festival favorite 'Me and You and Everyone We Know.' This time, she stars as part of a couple who adopt a stray cat and decide to quit their jobs, back away from the Internet and explore new interests. Presumably, this isn't a sci-fi flick about a cat great at mind control.

9:00 PM: 'Tyrannosaur' at Egyptian Theatre

Actor Paddy Considine jumps behind the camera to capture the story of a self-destructive man caught in a world of violence and the Christian charity-shop worker he falls in love with as they both reveal the pain in their lives.

10:00 PM: 7 Fresh Faces in Film Party at TR Suites, 136 Heber St.

The fourth annual event, hosted by Sarah Paulson, will honor Juno Temple ('Kaboom,' 'Little Birds'), Kyle Gallner ('Red State,' 'Little Birds'), Amy Seimetz ('The Off Hours'), Olivia Crocicchia ('Terri'), Thomas Dekker ('Kaboom'), Felicity Jones ('Like Crazy') and Adepero Oduye ('Pariah').

11:30 PM: 'Hobo with a Shotgun' at Library Center Theatre

Finally! After Machete got his shot at stretching beyond 'Grindhouse' trailers and capturing the spotlight, Rutger Hauer's Hobo gets his bloody turn. Sundance's blurb calls it "a legendary display of brutal butt-kicking and meticulous name-taking that is not to be missed."

11:59 PM: 'Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel' at Egyptian Theatre

Those not busy with horror-causing hobos can get a taste of the legendary Roger Corman with Alex Stapleton's new documentary.

Happy Friday!

It's FINALLY Friday!! We hope everyone has a great weekend!

Extreme Makeover reveals dream home to Dickinson family - WTOC, Savannah, Georgia, news, weather and sports |

Psychology of colour

Perhaps many of you are contemplating new decorating and painting projects and perhaps aren’t aware of the impact that color has on our mood. Before you pick up that paint brush or roller, read through our color psychology information. It just might help you set the appropriate mood for your space.

Red
Associated with: Danger, passion, energy, warmth, adventure and optimism.

Best for: The colour red is known as a sociable and lively colour and is used to stimulate the appetite, making this colour a prefect choice for dining rooms.
Though Reds have become more and more popular over the last couple of years and can range from fiery, passionate, sophisticated and warm, reds can also be overpowering and lead to headaches. It is a good idea to vary the shade of red on one wall or just use it for accessories. Reds should never be used in a baby's room.

Pink
Associated with: Love, fresh, flirtatious and distinctly feminine.

Best for: The colour pink has become very fashionable again and can be found ranging from soft pink to tropical coral or playful raspberry. Pink is a good colour for bedrooms as it can be peaceful and restful and if mixed with a hot fuchsia, introduce passion.
Pink can come across as too sweet and girlie – to counteract this you could introduce a neutral colour or hints of dark charcoal, brown or black

Orange
Associated with: Stability, reassurance, warmth, sunset, autumn leaves and it's also supposed to be an aid to digestion.

Best for: Living and dining rooms.
Orange is becoming increasingly popular and this year oranges are rich, cosy and slightly spiced but be aware that orange can make a room look smaller, so make sure you only use orange in a room with lots of natural light.

Green
Associated with: Promotes feelings of well-being and harmony, nature, security, stability and balance.

Best for: The colour green is known to aid concentration, making it a good colour for offices and study areas and bathrooms.
Green can make people complacent or too laid back, so inject different shades of green such as deep olive or the colour of new leaves to make the room fresh.

Blue
Associated with: Soothing and calming, loyalty, serenity, authority, protection, contemplative, prevents nightmares, promotes intellectual thought and is believed to keep hunger at bay.

Best for: Bedrooms and bathrooms.
Depending of the natural light in the room, Blue can look cold and therefore be unwelcoming. To prevent this make sure you choose a blue with a warm undertone such as oceanic turquoise or shades of wispy clouds.

Yellow
Associated with: Sunshine and energy, creativity and stimulates the intellect.

Best for: Kitchens, dining rooms or north facing rooms.
Yellow should not be used for a bedrooms as it is not a very restful colour. Yellow ranges from soft creamy butter to deep amber and is a friendly and inviting colour. Be careful with yellow as some stronger shades can enhance feelings of emotional distress.

Lilac
Associated with: Feminine, spiritual matters as it simulates the misty area between the sky and heaven.

Best for: Bedrooms and bathrooms to create a stress free sanctuary.
Lilac can be insipid. Try to live it up with black or silver, or both.

Purple
Associated with: Magic, creativity, joy, fertility, sensuous, luxurious and sex.

Best for: Bedrooms
Purple was once reserved solely for nobility. The colour purple is sumptuous and elegant. Purple ranges from deep plum, mysterious mauve to cheerful windflowers shades. Purple can be overpowering, so try to tone it down with a light shade of purple, use it for a feature wall or just accessories your room.

Brown
Associated with: Stability, security and a very practical colour.

Best for: Living rooms
The colour brown is also known as the 'new' neutral and with the various shades of taupe and beige brown, will look great with almost any colour. You could for example introduce a livelier colour for mental stimulation such as green or blue to compliment the brown.

Grey
Associated with: Sophistication.

Best for: All rooms
Neutral colours such as grey can be used to bring sense of order and peace to a colourful palette. Grey is considered smart and sophisticated and ranges from dark charcoal to misty silver and looks great when paired to colourful accents.

Black
Associated with: Drama, death and eccentricity. It is a non-colour that absorbs colour and reflects nothing back.

Best for: Nothing in particular but can be used in moderation.
Black is most commonly connected with depression and should not be use for a base colour but use to temper the sweetness of colours like pink

How to Drive Safely on Ice

Wintertime is especially hazardous for driving due to adverse weather. Encounters with ice, for example, can make drastic changes to driving conditions that can catch even experienced drivers off guard. If you have to go out in it, then follow these tips to stay as safe as possible.
  1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
  2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
  3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
  4. Keep your lights and windshield clean.
  5. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
  6. Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
  7. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
  8. Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.

The End of Vacation, Back to School

Kids drag their heels when returning to school after the long and happy Christmas break. Think like a kid, what you would most like to do when you get back to school? How can you ease the transition from fun, free time to getting back to work and learning? This year gather some ideas for the first day back after Christmas vacation to turn those somewhat glum faces into bright, joyous ones.

It is important that the entire family be prepared for the return to the school schedule. Preparation includes:

A. Purchasing pencils, notebooks, clothes, etc needed for the start of school.

B. For anxious children who experience separation with great difficulty it is important to be reassuring that they will return home at the end of the day and the family will still be there for them.

C. Children need the reassurance that parents will help them with their homework.

D. It is important that children get plenty of rest for the return to school. This means they must resume going to bed earlier than may have been permitted during vacation.

E. Parents need to help children with their clothes and lunches for their return to school.

It is important that parents set up structured procedures for children during the morning with each child's chores and expectations clearly delineated. This includes clearly set roles for each parent during the early morning. Both parents need to help get children dressed, fed and out of the house in a timely manner. Morning chaos promotes anxiety and anger for parents and children.
